I have just received your November Newsletter and it has prompted me to
write to thank the London and Kent Border League for sending the Newsletters
to me. It is hard to think that I left London for Jersey 13 years ago and
the League has kindly continued to send me the Newsletter which I always
read.
It is always with disappointment and sadness that I read of the odd
instances of unsporting behaviour. Although as ever the LKB is to be
complimented on the firm, speedy and positive action it takes to ban guilty
players and clubs, unfortunately the message just does not get through to
some people. Football is no longer an inexpensive hobby and it is difficult
enough to find officials to manage the Leagues, clubs and players who will
make a regular commitment, but when one reads of players carrying knives to
games one wonders where the game is going to?
On a personal note I am still in Politics and keeping myself busy on that
front.
Weather permitting, I generally take my push bike out on a Saturday
afternoon to watch a game. In Jersey, like the LKB some clubs are finding it
difficult to find enough officials and players to keep going. We do have the
odd incident of foul play and have recently had an incident whereby a racist
remark was directed at one of our referees. Apparently he gave a couple of
decisions against one of our Portuguese players. The player called the
referee an "English w@nker" Rightly the player was sent off. Interestingly
the referee was more offended by the word English than being called a
w@nker. He is reported as saying that he was not concerned about being
called a w@nker but took offence at being called an English w@nker as he was
Liverpudlian.
The player has received a long ban and the Club has not only banned the
player from the team but also from their Social Club.
The Jersey Football Association has recently run a Referees Assessors Course
organised by the English FA. I am waiting to hear whether I have been
accepted.
My best wishes to all at the LKB
Regards,
Fred/Bob Hill
