KEN ROOSTAN TROPY

07/09/2009

The first annual contest held in memory of our late President took place on 30 August at Bacons College between The Canterbury (league champions ) and Team Asylum ( winners of the Mary Wiltshire Shield ). Both teams know each other well and it was always going to be a tough and hard fought encounter, so nobody was surprised by an all - action affair jammed with controversy and no less than 9 goals.

Fittingly, Freddie Collins , our Referee of the Year was given the difficult job of officiating and he certainly had his work cut out. Four penalties were awarded and all scored....and although The Canterbury always seemed to have the edge, the game kept swinging backwards and forwards. Well into the second half and trailing 5-2, Team Asylum seemed dead and buried but two red cards in fairly quick succession reduced The Canterbury to 9 men.

Clawing their way back to 5-4 down and with the extra men starting to really make a difference, Team Asylum could see a chance to snatch victory in the final minutes but The Canterbury hung on to be the first ever winners of the Ken Roostan Cup. Lee Godfrey of Team Asylum scored a hat trick of penalties.

The victorious Canterbury team were presented with the cup by Ken's son Alan Roostan.
