The History of the Mary Wiltshire Shield
In 1963 Ron Wiltshire, our President wanted to form a new football league in South East London and the borders of Kent. His dream became a reality in September 1964 when the first ever game in the Delphis League was played. The Delphis League later changed its name to the London & Kent Border Football League. It was Ron's father Alfred T.Wiltshire who in 1964 donated the magnificent shield to the league naming it the Mary Wiltshire Shield after his wife and Ron's mother. From that day onwards it has been our premier trophy. The first winners of the shield were the famous Charterhouse Club beating Jaystone 5-4. The following season saw a repeat final with Charterhouse winning 2-0.Charterhouse featured in the final the following year losing to a Wiltshire XI. No club has won the trophy in three consecutive seasons. However six clubs have won it on two consecutive seasons - Charterhouse, Abbeyfield, Bexley, Battersea Celtic, Valley Valliant’s and Convoys. Only three clubs have lost in consecutive seasons - Bexley who lost to Abbeyfield in 1973-74 and 1974-75, and Santa Cruz losing to Rodney Sports in 1990-91 and Crown Rovers in 1991-92.Peckham Rye lost to Kenningwell United in 1997-98 and Springhill United the following season. The Highest Score was achieved by Battersea Celtic when they beat Pilgrim 8-0 in 1981-82.Inerdently the following season Battersea Celtic beat Tanner Sports 7-6 in the final.Kenningwell United hold the record for most appearances in the Final Winners 1992-93,1997-98,2006-07 and Runners Up in 1999-00.Baldon Sports have appeared in the last 3 finals 2005-06,2006-07,2007-08 loosing all three.
